Marquis Classics: Starry, Starry Night

A 2-CD album celebrating nighttime's many moods

Marquis Classics 81503

“Nighttime has always intrigued creative artists: poets, painters, filmmakers, and of course, musicians. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries composers like Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Debussy and Ravel enriched the piano repertoire with dazzling portrayals of nighttime’s diverse sounds, moods, hues and scents. Here we find expressions of love, of loneliness, of terror at what lurks beyond dark shadows, of a mother singing her child to sleep, of fiery explosions momentarily illuminating the night sky, of love, of intense fragrances and echoes of guitars in a steamy port city, of twinkling stars, of making love in a Venetian gondola, of far-off sounds heard across a body of water, of moonlit ruins of an ancient temple, and again of love, always of love…”

Reviews

"A delightful and stimulating collection of music for the night-owl in all of us. CD 1 is an all-Chopin treasure. The music is familiar yet Silverman manages to coax out refreshing performances. His Chopin is illuminated by a perfect combination of technique, musical nuance and raw emotion. The mystery of the resulting sound is a gift to the listener. Of particular note on CD 2 is his performance of Debussy’s Feux d’artifice. Silverman’s Clair de Lune and Schumann’s Traumerei shed new light on these popular works. A beautiful release."
